BabelDOC: Better Layout-Preserving PDF Translation via Intermediate Representation

As global cross-lingual communication intensifies, language barriers in visually rich documents such as PDFs remain a practical bottleneck. Existing document translation pipelines face a tension between linguistic processing and layout preservation: text-oriented Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) systems often discard structural metadata, while document parsers focus on extraction and do not support faithful re-rendering after translation. We introduce BabelDOC, an Intermediate Representation (IR)-based framework for layout-preserving PDF translation. BabelDOC decouples visual layout metadata from semantic content, enabling document-level translation operations such as terminology extraction, cross-page context handling, glossary-constrained generation, and formula placeholdering. The translated content is then re-anchored to the original layout through an adaptive typesetting engine. Experiments on a curated 200-page benchmark, together with human evaluation and multimodal LLM-as-a-judge evaluation, show that BabelDOC improves layout fidelity, visual aesthetics, and terminology consistency over representative baselines, while maintaining competitive translation precision. The open-source toolkit and its interactive downstream applications are publicly available and have attracted over 8.4K GitHub stars and 17 contributors at the time of writing. LLMs-in-the-Loop Part 2: Expert Small AI Models for Anonymization and De-identification of PHI Across Multiple Languages

The rise of chronic diseases and pandemics like COVID-19 has emphasized the need for effective patient data processing while ensuring privacy through anonymization and de-identification of protected health information (PHI). Anonymized data facilitates research without compromising patient confidentiality. This paper introduces expert small AI models developed using the LLM-in-the-loop methodology to meet the demand for domain-specific de-identification NER models. These models overcome the privacy risks associated with large language models (LLMs) used via APIs by eliminating the need to transmit or store sensitive data. More importantly, they consistently outperform LLMs in de-identification tasks, offering superior performance and reliability. Our de-identification NER models, developed in eight languages (English, German, Italian, French, Romanian, Turkish, Spanish, and Arabic) achieved f1-micro score averages of 0.966, 0.975, 0.976, 0.970, 0.964, 0.974, 0.978, and 0.953 respectively. These results establish them as the most accurate healthcare anonymization solutions, surpassing existing small models and even general-purpose LLMs such as GPT-4o. While Part-1 of this series introduced the LLM-in-the-loop methodology for bio-medical document translation, this second paper showcases its success in developing cost-effective expert small NER models in de-identification tasks. Our findings lay the groundwork for future healthcare AI innovations, including biomedical entity and relation extraction, demonstrating the value of specialized models for domain-specific challenges.

CLIRudit: Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval of Scientific Documents

Cross-lingual information retrieval (CLIR) consists in finding relevant documents in a language that differs from the language of the queries. This paper presents CLIRudit, a new dataset created to evaluate cross-lingual academic search, focusing on English queries and French documents. The dataset is built using bilingual article metadata from \'Erudit, a Canadian publishing platform, and is designed to represent scenarios in which researchers search for scholarly content in languages other than English. We perform a comprehensive benchmarking of different zero-shot first-stage retrieval methods on the dataset, including dense and sparse retrievers, query and document machine translation, and state-of-the-art multilingual retrievers. Our results show that large dense retrievers, not necessarily trained for the cross-lingual retrieval task, can achieve zero-shot performance comparable to using ground truth human translations, without the need for machine translation. Sparse retrievers, such as BM25 or SPLADE, combined with document translation, show competitive results, providing an efficient alternative to large dense models. This research advances the understanding of cross-lingual academic information retrieval and provides a framework that others can use to build comparable datasets across different languages and disciplines. By making the dataset and code publicly available, we aim to facilitate further research that will help make scientific knowledge more accessible across language barriers.

Discourse Centric Evaluation of Machine Translation with a Densely Annotated Parallel Corpus

Several recent papers claim human parity at sentence-level Machine Translation (MT), especially in high-resource languages. Thus, in response, the MT community has, in part, shifted its focus to document-level translation. Translating documents requires a deeper understanding of the structure and meaning of text, which is often captured by various kinds of discourse phenomena such as consistency, coherence, and cohesion. However, this renders conventional sentence-level MT evaluation benchmarks inadequate for evaluating the performance of context-aware MT systems. This paper presents a new dataset with rich discourse annotations, built upon the large-scale parallel corpus BWB introduced in Jiang et al. (2022). The new BWB annotation introduces four extra evaluation aspects, i.e., entity, terminology, coreference, and quotation, covering 15,095 entity mentions in both languages. Using these annotations, we systematically investigate the similarities and differences between the discourse structures of source and target languages, and the challenges they pose to MT. We discover that MT outputs differ fundamentally from human translations in terms of their latent discourse structures. This gives us a new perspective on the challenges and opportunities in document-level MT. We make our resource publicly available to spur future research in document-level MT and the generalization to other language translation tasks.

New Trends for Modern Machine Translation with Large Reasoning Models

Recent advances in Large Reasoning Models (LRMs), particularly those leveraging Chain-of-Thought reasoning (CoT), have opened brand new possibility for Machine Translation (MT). This position paper argues that LRMs substantially transformed traditional neural MT as well as LLMs-based MT paradigms by reframing translation as a dynamic reasoning task that requires contextual, cultural, and linguistic understanding and reasoning. We identify three foundational shifts: 1) contextual coherence, where LRMs resolve ambiguities and preserve discourse structure through explicit reasoning over cross-sentence and complex context or even lack of context; 2) cultural intentionality, enabling models to adapt outputs by inferring speaker intent, audience expectations, and socio-linguistic norms; 3) self-reflection, LRMs can perform self-reflection during the inference time to correct the potential errors in translation especially extremely noisy cases, showing better robustness compared to simply mapping X->Y translation. We explore various scenarios in translation including stylized translation, document-level translation and multimodal translation by showcasing empirical examples that demonstrate the superiority of LRMs in translation. We also identify several interesting phenomenons for LRMs for MT including auto-pivot translation as well as the critical challenges such as over-localisation in translation and inference efficiency. In conclusion, we think that LRMs redefine translation systems not merely as text converters but as multilingual cognitive agents capable of reasoning about meaning beyond the text. This paradigm shift reminds us to think of problems in translation beyond traditional translation scenarios in a much broader context with LRMs - what we can achieve on top of it.

AfriqueLLM: How Data Mixing and Model Architecture Impact Continued Pre-training for African Languages

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly multilingual, yet open models continue to underperform relative to proprietary systems, with the gap most pronounced for African languages. Continued pre-training (CPT) offers a practical route to language adaptation, but improvements on demanding capabilities such as mathematical reasoning often remain limited. This limitation is driven in part by the uneven domain coverage and missing task-relevant knowledge that characterize many low-resource language corpora. We present AfriqueLLM, a suite of open LLMs adapted to 20 African languages through CPT on 26B tokens. We perform a comprehensive empirical study across five base models spanning sizes and architectures, including Llama 3.1, Gemma 3, and Qwen 3, and systematically analyze how CPT data composition shapes downstream performance. In particular, we vary mixtures that include math, code, and synthetic translated data, and evaluate the resulting models on a range of multilingual benchmarks. Our results identify data composition as the primary driver of CPT gains. Adding math, code, and synthetic translated data yields consistent improvements, including on reasoning-oriented evaluations. Within a fixed architecture, larger models typically improve performance, but architectural choices dominate scale when comparing across model families. Moreover, strong multilingual performance in the base model does not reliably predict post-CPT outcomes; robust architectures coupled with task-aligned data provide a more dependable recipe. CsFEVER and CTKFacts: Acquiring Czech data for fact verification

In this paper, we examine several methods of acquiring Czech data for automated fact-checking, which is a task commonly modeled as a classification of textual claim veracity w.r.t. a corpus of trusted ground truths. We attempt to collect sets of data in form of a factual claim, evidence within the ground truth corpus, and its veracity label (supported, refuted or not enough info). As a first attempt, we generate a Czech version of the large-scale FEVER dataset built on top of Wikipedia corpus. We take a hybrid approach of machine translation and document alignment; the approach and the tools we provide can be easily applied to other languages. We discuss its weaknesses and inaccuracies, propose a future approach for their cleaning and publish the 127k resulting translations, as well as a version of such dataset reliably applicable for the Natural Language Inference task - the CsFEVER-NLI. Furthermore, we collect a novel dataset of 3,097 claims, which is annotated using the corpus of 2.2M articles of Czech News Agency. We present its extended annotation methodology based on the FEVER approach, and, as the underlying corpus is kept a trade secret, we also publish a standalone version of the dataset for the task of Natural Language Inference we call CTKFactsNLI. We analyze both acquired datasets for spurious cues - annotation patterns leading to model overfitting. CTKFacts is further examined for inter-annotator agreement, thoroughly cleaned, and a typology of common annotator errors is extracted. Finally, we provide baseline models for all stages of the fact-checking pipeline and publish the NLI datasets, as well as our annotation platform and other experimental data.

DiscoScore: Evaluating Text Generation with BERT and Discourse Coherence

Recently, there has been a growing interest in designing text generation systems from a discourse coherence perspective, e.g., modeling the interdependence between sentences. Still, recent BERT-based evaluation metrics are weak in recognizing coherence, and thus are not reliable in a way to spot the discourse-level improvements of those text generation systems. In this work, we introduce DiscoScore, a parametrized discourse metric, which uses BERT to model discourse coherence from different perspectives, driven by Centering theory. Our experiments encompass 16 non-discourse and discourse metrics, including DiscoScore and popular coherence models, evaluated on summarization and document-level machine translation (MT). We find that (i) the majority of BERT-based metrics correlate much worse with human rated coherence than early discourse metrics, invented a decade ago; (ii) the recent state-of-the-art BARTScore is weak when operated at system level -- which is particularly problematic as systems are typically compared in this manner. DiscoScore, in contrast, achieves strong system-level correlation with human ratings, not only in coherence but also in factual consistency and other aspects, and surpasses BARTScore by over 10 correlation points on average. Further, aiming to understand DiscoScore, we provide justifications to the importance of discourse coherence for evaluation metrics, and explain the superiority of one variant over another. DEPLAIN: A German Parallel Corpus with Intralingual Translations into Plain Language for Sentence and Document Simplification

Text simplification is an intralingual translation task in which documents, or sentences of a complex source text are simplified for a target audience. The success of automatic text simplification systems is highly dependent on the quality of parallel data used for training and evaluation. To advance sentence simplification and document simplification in German, this paper presents DEplain, a new dataset of parallel, professionally written and manually aligned simplifications in plain German ("plain DE" or in German: "Einfache Sprache"). DEplain consists of a news domain (approx. 500 document pairs, approx. 13k sentence pairs) and a web-domain corpus (approx. 150 aligned documents, approx. 2k aligned sentence pairs). In addition, we are building a web harvester and experimenting with automatic alignment methods to facilitate the integration of non-aligned and to be published parallel documents. Using this approach, we are dynamically increasing the web domain corpus, so it is currently extended to approx. 750 document pairs and approx. 3.5k aligned sentence pairs. We show that using DEplain to train a transformer-based seq2seq text simplification model can achieve promising results. Clinical Document Corpora and Assorted Domain Proxies: A Survey of Diversity in Corpus Design, with Focus on German Text Data

We survey clinical document corpora, with focus on German textual data. Due to rigid data privacy legislation in Germany these resources, with only few exceptions, are stored in safe clinical data spaces and locked against clinic-external researchers. This situation stands in stark contrast with established workflows in the field of natural language processing where easy accessibility and reuse of data collections are common practice. Hence, alternative corpus designs have been examined to escape from this data poverty. Besides machine translation of English clinical datasets and the generation of synthetic corpora with fictitious clinical contents, several other types of domain proxies have come up as substitutes for authentic clinical documents. Common instances of close proxies are medical journal publications, clinical therapy guidelines, drug labels, etc., more distant proxies include online encyclopedic medical articles or medical contents from social media channels. After PRISM-conformant screening of 359 hits from four bibliographic systems, 75 relevant documents were finally selected for this review and 59 distinct corpora were determined. We identified 24 real clinical corpora (from 40 publications) out of which only 5 are publicly distributable. 2 translations of real corpora and 3 synthetic ones complement the set of clinical corpora. 14 corpora were categorized as close domain proxies, 16 as distant ones. There is a clear divide between the large number of non-accessible authentic clinical German-language corpora and their publicly accessible substitutes: translated or synthetic, close or more distant proxies. So on first sight, the data bottleneck seems broken. Intuitively yet, differences in genre-specific writing style, wording and medical domain expertise in this typological space are also obvious. This raises the question how valid alternative corpus designs really are.

Document AI: A Comparative Study of Transformer-Based, Graph-Based Models, and Convolutional Neural Networks For Document Layout Analysis

Document AI aims to automatically analyze documents by leveraging natural language processing and computer vision techniques. One of the major tasks of Document AI is document layout analysis, which structures document pages by interpreting the content and spatial relationships of layout, image, and text. This task can be image-centric, wherein the aim is to identify and label various regions such as authors and paragraphs, or text-centric, where the focus is on classifying individual words in a document. Although there are increasingly sophisticated methods for improving layout analysis, doubts remain about the extent to which their findings can be generalized to a broader context. Specifically, prior work developed systems based on very different architectures, such as transformer-based, graph-based, and CNNs. However, no work has mentioned the effectiveness of these models in a comparative analysis. Moreover, while language-independent Document AI models capable of knowledge transfer have been developed, it remains to be investigated to what degree they can effectively transfer knowledge. In this study, we aim to fill these gaps by conducting a comparative evaluation of state-of-the-art models in document layout analysis and investigating the potential of cross-lingual layout analysis by utilizing machine translation techniques.

LLMs Can Achieve High-quality Simultaneous Machine Translation as Efficiently as Offline

When the complete source sentence is provided, Large Language Models (LLMs) perform excellently in offline machine translation even with a simple prompt "Translate the following sentence from [src lang] into [tgt lang]:". However, in many real scenarios, the source tokens arrive in a streaming manner and simultaneous machine translation (SiMT) is required, then the efficiency and performance of decoder-only LLMs are significantly limited by their auto-regressive nature. To enable LLMs to achieve high-quality SiMT as efficiently as offline translation, we propose a novel paradigm that includes constructing supervised fine-tuning (SFT) data for SiMT, along with new training and inference strategies. To replicate the token input/output stream in SiMT, the source and target tokens are rearranged into an interleaved sequence, separated by special tokens according to varying latency requirements. This enables powerful LLMs to learn read and write operations adaptively, based on varying latency prompts, while still maintaining efficient auto-regressive decoding. Experimental results show that, even with limited SFT data, our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance across various SiMT benchmarks, and preserves the original abilities of offline translation. Moreover, our approach generalizes well to document-level SiMT setting without requiring specific fine-tuning, even beyond the offline translation model.

KletterMix: Climbing Toward High-Quality German Pretraining Data

High-quality pretraining data is a central ingredient in modern language models, but German-language resources remain far less developed than their English counterparts: they are often smaller, less carefully curated, weakly documented, and rarely validated through controlled training experiments. We introduce KletterMix, a high-quality German corpus for language model pretraining and annealing, designed as a reusable dataset artifact for the natural language processing and modeling community. KletterMix is built by translating a state-of-the-art English pretraining corpus into German while preserving document boundaries, metadata, source structure, and topical diversity. This construction yields a German corpus with the scale and diversity of a modern pretraining dataset, while enabling direct comparison to its English source. We document the dataset through a broad set of corpus-level analyses, including translation quality, document length distributions, topic coverage, source composition, and geographic metadata. Using COMETKiwi, we show that the translated documents achieve strong quality across diverse domains, suggesting that careful translation can preserve much of the semantic and stylistic richness of the original corpus. Beyond dataset construction, we evaluate KletterMix as training data. Through controlled pretraining and annealing ablations against established German corpora, we show that models trained on KletterMix achieve measurable improvements on German-language downstream evaluations. These results demonstrate that carefully curated translated data can substantially strengthen the German pretraining data ecosystem.

HunyuanOCR-1.5: Making Lightweight OCR VLMs Faster and Better

We present HunyuanOCR-1.5, a lightweight end-to-end OCR-specialized vision-language model. HunyuanOCR unifies document parsing, text spotting, information extraction, text-image translation, and multi-image document understanding within a single end-to-end VLM. Building upon the lightweight architecture of HunyuanOCR-1.0, HunyuanOCR-1.5 does not redesign the backbone, but systematically improves both efficiency and capability. For efficiency, we adapt DFlash to OCR decoding, significantly reducing the latency of long structured outputs such as dense documents, tables, and formulas while preserving output distribution. Powered by DFlash, HunyuanOCR-1.5 achieves a 6.37x Transformer inference speedup and a 2.14x speedup under vLLM, delivering the fastest inference among lightweight OCR VLMs. For capability, we propose Agentic Data Flow, an agent-driven data construction system that transforms model weaknesses into executable data requirements and autonomously performs material search, quality verification, and pipeline development. It substantially improves long-tail capabilities in ancient-script OCR, fine-grained chart and table parsing, multi-image text-centric QA, low-resource multilingual parsing, and document hallucination evaluation. HunyuanOCR-1.5 ranks among the top-tier end-to-end OCR solutions on OmniDocBench v1.6 while achieving new performance milestones across these long-tail tasks. Combined with an upgraded pretraining and post-training recipe, HunyuanOCR-1.5 further extends its capability in high-resolution, long-context, and multi-task scenarios. Experiments demonstrate faster inference, broader OCR capability coverage, and the deployment advantages of a lightweight end-to-end model. We will release the model weights and training code to support future research and real-world OCR applications.

Physics-R1: An Audited Olympiad Corpus and Recipe for Visual Physics Reasoning

We audit the multimodal-physics evaluation pipeline end-to-end and document three undetected construction practices that distort how the field measures vision-language reasoning: train-eval contamination, translation drift, and MCQ saturation. (1) Public training pools (UGPhysics-Train, SciInstruct, MMK12) pass single-stage 5-gram-Jaccard audits with zero hits across all six public physics evals; a three-stage audit (Jaccard -> mxbai-embed-large cosine -> Haiku-4.5 LLM-judge) surfaces 134 near-duplicates and 4,846 paraphrase candidates in SciInstruct alone. (2) A 17-pp Sonnet 4.5 delta on 59 paired Estonian-English olympiad problems (30.5% vs. 13.6%; sign test p=0.011, McNemar p=0.021, paired bootstrap 95% CI [+5.1, +28.9] pp). (3) A 46-pp format-and-novelty gradient on identical Sonnet weights between MCQ (79.7% on PhyX) and open-ended olympiad evaluation (33.4% on PhysOlym-A). We release four artifacts addressing these gaps: PhysCorp-A (6,432-record three-stage-audited multimodal corpus), PhysR1Corp (2,268-record closed-form RL pool), PhysOlym-A (500-problem, 99.8% novel-source held-out olympiad eval with native difficulty labels and an EN/ET bilingual subset), and Physics-R1, a reference GSPO+DAPO recipe cold-started from Qwen3-VL-8B-Thinking. Across 3 seeds, Physics-R1 lifts the audited corpus over the 8B base by +18.3 pp on PhysOlym-A liberal (8.0 -> 26.3 +/- 1.7; 7.1 pp behind Sonnet 4.5), +15.7 pp on PhysReason (23.9 -> 39.6 +/- 6.4; ahead of Qwen3-VL-32B and Gemini 2.5 Pro), +6.9 pp on OlympiadBench-Physics (46.2 +/- 1.5), and +4.1 pp on PhyX MCQ (77.8 +/- 0.3).

HERITAGE: An End-to-End Web Platform for Processing Korean Historical Documents in Hanja

While Korean historical documents are invaluable cultural heritage, understanding those documents requires in-depth Hanja expertise. Hanja is an ancient language used in Korea before the 20th century, whose characters were borrowed from old Chinese but had evolved in Korea for centuries. Modern Koreans and Chinese cannot understand Korean historical documents without substantial additional help, and while previous efforts have produced some Korean and English translations, this requires in-depth expertise, and so most of the documents are not translated into any modern language. To address this gap, we present HERITAGE, the first open-source Hanja NLP toolkit to assist in understanding and translating the unexplored Korean historical documents written in Hanja. HERITAGE is a web-based platform providing model predictions of three critical tasks in historical document understanding via Hanja language models: punctuation restoration, named entity recognition, and machine translation (MT). HERITAGE also provides an interactive glossary, which provides the character-level reading of the Hanja characters in modern Korean, as well as character-level English definition. HERITAGE serves two purposes. First, anyone interested in these documents can get a general understanding from the model predictions and the interactive glossary, especially MT outputs in Korean and English. Second, since the model outputs are not perfect, Hanja experts can revise them to produce better annotations and translations. This would boost the translation efficiency and potentially lead to most of the historical documents being translated into modern languages, lowering the barrier on unexplored Korean historical documents.

LLMs4All: A Review on Large Language Models for Research and Applications in Academic Disciplines

Cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques keep reshaping our view of the world. For example, Large Language Models (LLMs) based applications such as ChatGPT have shown the capability of generating human-like conversation on extensive topics. Due to the impressive performance on a variety of language-related tasks (e.g., open-domain question answering, translation, and document summarization), one can envision the far-reaching impacts that can be brought by the LLMs with broader real-world applications (e.g., customer service, education and accessibility, and scientific discovery). Inspired by their success, this paper will offer an overview of state-of-the-art LLMs and their integration into a wide range of academic disciplines, including: (1) arts, letters, and law (e.g., history, philosophy, political science, arts and architecture, law), (2) economics and business (e.g., finance, economics, accounting, marketing), and (3) science and engineering (e.g., mathematics, physics and mechanical engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering, life sciences and bioengineering, earth sciences and civil engineering, computer science and electrical engineering). Integrating humanity and technology, in this paper, we will explore how LLMs are shaping research and practice in these fields, while also discussing key limitations, open challenges, and future directions in the era of generative AI. The review of how LLMs are engaged across disciplines-along with key observations and insights-can help researchers and practitioners interested in exploiting LLMs to advance their works in diverse real-world applications.

Classification of Non-native Handwritten Characters Using Convolutional Neural Network

The use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has accelerated the progress of handwritten character classification/recognition. Handwritten character recognition (HCR) has found applications in various domains, such as traffic signal detection, language translation, and document information extraction. However, the widespread use of existing HCR technology is yet to be seen as it does not provide reliable character recognition with outstanding accuracy. One of the reasons for unreliable HCR is that existing HCR methods do not take the handwriting styles of non-native writers into account. Hence, further improvement is needed to ensure the reliability and extensive deployment of character recognition technologies for critical tasks. In this work, the classification of English characters written by non-native users is performed by proposing a custom-tailored CNN model. We train this CNN with a new dataset called the handwritten isolated English character (HIEC) dataset. This dataset consists of 16,496 images collected from 260 persons. This paper also includes an ablation study of our CNN by adjusting hyperparameters to identify the best model for the HIEC dataset. The proposed model with five convolutional layers and one hidden layer outperforms state-of-the-art models in terms of character recognition accuracy and achieves an accuracy of 97.04%. Compared with the second-best model, the relative improvement of our model in terms of classification accuracy is 4.38%.

Bibby AI: An Editor-Native Agentic Platform for Academic Research, Writing, and Publishing

Academic output is produced across a fragmented toolchain: literature discovery in one application, reference management in another, writing in a LaTeX editor, formatting against venue templates by hand, and submission through yet another portal. Each boundary between tools forces a context switch, a format conversion, or a manual copy-paste step, and the cumulative cost dominates the time researchers spend on activities that are not research. We present Bibby AI, an editor-native platform that collapses this toolchain into a single Research-Write-Publish pipeline built around a cloud LaTeX editor. Unlike assistants that attach to an existing editor through a browser extension, Bibby AI owns the full document state, compilation pipeline, and revision history, which allows its agents to perform retrieval-grounded citation insertion, structural edits, and template-compliant reformatting as first-class, verifiable operations rather than text suggestions. The platform integrates (i) ingestion pipelines that convert PDF, DOCX, and handwritten mathematics into clean LaTeX; (ii) a retrieval layer over scholarly metadata enriched with patent-to-paper citation signals derived from USPTO PatentsView and the Marx-Fuegi citation corpus, surfacing the translational impact of candidate references; and (iii) task-scoped agents for literature triage, drafting, revision, and venue formatting that operate directly on the document's abstract syntax representation. Bibby AI is deployed in production and serves more than 5,000 active researchers across more than 50 subscribing universities. We describe the architecture, the design decisions that editor-nativeness makes possible, and the workflow-level time-savings framework we use to evaluate the platform against fragmented baselines.

A General-Purpose Multilingual Document Encoder

Massively multilingual pretrained transformers (MMTs) have tremendously pushed the state of the art on multilingual NLP and cross-lingual transfer of NLP models in particular. While a large body of work leveraged MMTs to mine parallel data and induce bilingual document embeddings, much less effort has been devoted to training general-purpose (massively) multilingual document encoder that can be used for both supervised and unsupervised document-level tasks. In this work, we pretrain a massively multilingual document encoder as a hierarchical transformer model (HMDE) in which a shallow document transformer contextualizes sentence representations produced by a state-of-the-art pretrained multilingual sentence encoder. We leverage Wikipedia as a readily available source of comparable documents for creating training data, and train HMDE by means of a cross-lingual contrastive objective, further exploiting the category hierarchy of Wikipedia for creation of difficult negatives. We evaluate the effectiveness of HMDE in two arguably most common and prominent cross-lingual document-level tasks: (1) cross-lingual transfer for topical document classification and (2) cross-lingual document retrieval. HMDE is significantly more effective than (i) aggregations of segment-based representations and (ii) multilingual Longformer. Crucially, owing to its massively multilingual lower transformer, HMDE successfully generalizes to languages unseen in document-level pretraining. Improving Semantic Proximity in Information Retrieval through Cross-Lingual Alignment

With the increasing accessibility and utilization of multilingual documents, Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval (CLIR) has emerged as an important research area. Conventionally, CLIR tasks have been conducted under settings where the language of documents differs from that of queries, and typically, the documents are composed in a single coherent language. In this paper, we highlight that in such a setting, the cross-lingual alignment capability may not be evaluated adequately. Specifically, we observe that, in a document pool where English documents coexist with another language, most multilingual retrievers tend to prioritize unrelated English documents over the related document written in the same language as the query. To rigorously analyze and quantify this phenomenon, we introduce various scenarios and metrics designed to evaluate the cross-lingual alignment performance of multilingual retrieval models. Furthermore, to improve cross-lingual performance under these challenging conditions, we propose a novel training strategy aimed at enhancing cross-lingual alignment. Using only a small dataset consisting of 2.8k samples, our method significantly improves the cross-lingual retrieval performance while simultaneously mitigating the English inclination problem. Extensive analyses demonstrate that the proposed method substantially enhances the cross-lingual alignment capabilities of most multilingual embedding models.

μgat: Improving Single-Page Document Parsing by Providing Multi-Page Context

Regesta are catalogs of summaries of other documents and, in some cases, are the only source of information about the content of such full-length documents. For this reason, they are of great interest to scholars in many social and humanities fields. In this work, we focus on Regesta Pontificum Romanum, a large collection of papal registers. Regesta are visually rich documents, where the layout is as important as the text content to convey the contained information through the structure, and are inherently multi-page documents. Among Digital Humanities techniques that can help scholars efficiently exploit regesta and other documental sources in the form of scanned documents, Document Parsing has emerged as a task to process document images and convert them into machine-readable structured representations, usually markup language. However, current models focus on scientific and business documents, and most of them consider only single-paged documents. To overcome this limitation, in this work, we propose {\mu}gat, an extension of the recently proposed Document parsing Nougat architecture, which can handle elements spanning over the single page limits. Specifically, we adapt Nougat to process a larger, multi-page context, consisting of the previous and the following page, while parsing the current page. Experimental results, both qualitative and quantitative, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach also in the case of the challenging Regesta Pontificum Romanorum.

MORE: A Multilingual Document Parsing Benchmark and Evaluation

Multilingual documents encapsulate rich regional cultures, scientific discoveries, and historical records. Parsing this content into structured, machine-readable formats is critical for unlocking global knowledge. However, existing benchmarks predominantly focus on high-resource languages like English and Chinese, creating an evaluation blind spot concerning model performance on other languages. While recent Vision-Language Models (VLMs) claim support for hundreds of languages, the lack of ground truth makes it impossible to empirically verify these capabilities. To bridge this gap, we introduce MORE, a large-scale benchmark designed for multilingual document parsing evaluation. MORE distinguishes itself through three key dimensions: (1) Unprecedented Scale: It covers 149 languages, making it the most linguistically diverse benchmark to date; (2) Structural Complexity: Unlike previous works, it extends evaluation beyond plain text to include structural elements such as code blocks, tables, and catalogs; and (3) Data Authenticity: All samples are curated from real-world documents via a model-assisted, human-refined annotation pipeline. We evaluate state-of-the-art models using MORE, establishing new performance baselines for long-tail languages and validating the benchmark's effectiveness in diagnosing model capabilities in realistic, diverse scenarios. POINTS-Reader: Distillation-Free Adaptation of Vision-Language Models for Document Conversion

High-quality labeled data is essential for training accurate document conversion models, particularly in domains with complex formats such as tables, formulas, and multi-column text. However, manual annotation is both costly and time-consuming, while automatic labeling using existing models often lacks accuracy in handling such challenging scenarios. Consequently, training student models by distilling outputs from teacher models can significantly limit their performance in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a fully automated, distillation-free framework comprising two stages for constructing high-quality document extraction datasets and models capable of handling diverse document formats and layouts. In the first stage, we introduce a method for generating large-scale, diverse synthetic data, which enables a model to extract key elements in a unified format with strong initial performance. In the second stage, we present a self-improvement approach that further adapts the model, initially trained on synthetic data, to real-world documents. Specifically, we first use the fine-tuned model to annotate real documents, then apply a suite of filtering strategies to verify annotation quality, and finally retrain the model on the verified dataset. By iteratively repeating this process, we progressively enhance both the model's conversion capabilities and the quality of the generated data. We train a public POINTS-1.5 model to obtain POINTS-Reader, which surpasses many existing public and proprietary models of comparable or larger size. DocGenome: An Open Large-scale Scientific Document Benchmark for Training and Testing Multi-modal Large Language Models

Scientific documents record research findings and valuable human knowledge, comprising a vast corpus of high-quality data. Leveraging multi-modality data extracted from these documents and assessing large models' abilities to handle scientific document-oriented tasks is therefore meaningful. Despite promising advancements, large models still perform poorly on multi-page scientific document extraction and understanding tasks, and their capacity to process within-document data formats such as charts and equations remains under-explored. To address these issues, we present DocGenome, a structured document benchmark constructed by annotating 500K scientific documents from 153 disciplines in the arXiv open-access community, using our custom auto-labeling pipeline. DocGenome features four key characteristics: 1) Completeness: It is the first dataset to structure data from all modalities including 13 layout attributes along with their LaTeX source codes. 2) Logicality: It provides 6 logical relationships between different entities within each scientific document. 3) Diversity: It covers various document-oriented tasks, including document classification, visual grounding, document layout detection, document transformation, open-ended single-page QA and multi-page QA. 4) Correctness: It undergoes rigorous quality control checks conducted by a specialized team. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the advantages of DocGenome and objectively evaluate the performance of large models on our benchmark.

Typhoon OCR: Open Vision-Language Model For Thai Document Extraction

Document extraction is a core component of digital workflows, yet existing vision-language models (VLMs) predominantly favor high-resource languages. Thai presents additional challenges due to script complexity from non-latin letters, the absence of explicit word boundaries, and the prevalence of highly unstructured real-world documents, limiting the effectiveness of current open-source models. This paper presents Typhoon OCR, an open VLM for document extraction tailored for Thai and English. The model is fine-tuned from vision-language backbones using a Thai-focused training dataset. The dataset is developed using a multi-stage data construction pipeline that combines traditional OCR, VLM-based restructuring, and curated synthetic data. Typhoon OCR is a unified framework capable of text transcription, layout reconstruction, and document-level structural consistency. The latest iteration of our model, Typhoon OCR V1.5, is a compact and inference-efficient model designed to reduce reliance on metadata and simplify deployment. Comprehensive evaluations across diverse Thai document categories, including financial reports, government forms, books, infographics, and handwritten documents, show that Typhoon OCR achieves performance comparable to or exceeding larger frontier proprietary models, despite substantially lower computational cost. The results demonstrate that open vision-language OCR models can achieve accurate text extraction and layout reconstruction for Thai documents, reaching performance comparable to proprietary systems while remaining lightweight and deployable.

MDPBench: A Benchmark for Multilingual Document Parsing in Real-World Scenarios

We introduce Multilingual Document Parsing Benchmark, the first benchmark for multilingual digital and photographed document parsing. Document parsing has made remarkable strides, yet almost exclusively on clean, digital, well-formatted pages in a handful of dominant languages. No systematic benchmark exists to evaluate how models perform on digital and photographed documents across diverse scripts and low-resource languages. MDPBench comprises 3,400 document images spanning 17 languages, diverse scripts, and varied photographic conditions, with high-quality annotations produced through a rigorous pipeline of expert model labeling, manual correction, and human verification. To ensure fair comparison and prevent data leakage, we maintain separate public and private evaluation splits. Our comprehensive evaluation of both open-source and closed-source models uncovers a striking finding: while closed-source models (notably Gemini3-Pro) prove relatively robust, open-source alternatives suffer dramatic performance collapse, particularly on non-Latin scripts and real-world photographed documents, with an average drop of 17.8% on photographed documents and 14.0% on non-Latin scripts. These results reveal significant performance imbalances across languages and conditions, and point to concrete directions for building more inclusive, deployment-ready parsing systems. GeAR: Generation Augmented Retrieval

Document retrieval techniques form the foundation for the development of large-scale information systems. The prevailing methodology is to construct a bi-encoder and compute the semantic similarity. However, such scalar similarity is difficult to reflect enough information and impedes our comprehension of the retrieval results. In addition, this computational process mainly emphasizes the global semantics and ignores the fine-grained semantic relationship between the query and the complex text in the document. In this paper, we propose a new method called Generation Augmented Retrieval (GeAR) that incorporates well-designed fusion and decoding modules. This enables GeAR to generate the relevant text from documents based on the fused representation of the query and the document, thus learning to "focus on" the fine-grained information. Also when used as a retriever, GeAR does not add any computational burden over bi-encoders. To support the training of the new framework, we have introduced a pipeline to efficiently synthesize high-quality data by utilizing large language models. GeAR exhibits competitive retrieval and localization performance across diverse scenarios and datasets. Moreover, the qualitative analysis and the results generated by GeAR provide novel insights into the interpretation of retrieval results. The code, data, and models will be released after completing technical review to facilitate future research.

Shared Heritage, Distinct Writing: Rethinking Resource Selection for East Asian Historical Documents

Historical documents in the Sinosphere are known to share common formats and practices, particularly in veritable records compiled by court historians. This shared linguistic heritage has led researchers to use Classical Chinese resources for cross-lingual transfer when processing historical documents from Korea and Japan, which remain relatively low-resource. In this paper, we question the assumption of cross-lingual transferability from Classical Chinese to Hanja and Kanbun, the ancient written languages of Korea and Japan, respectively. Our experiments across machine translation, named entity recognition, and punctuation restoration tasks show minimal impact of Classical Chinese datasets on language model performance for ancient Korean documents written in Hanja, with performance differences within 0.0068 F1-score for sequence labeling tasks and up to +0.84 BLEU score for translation. These limitations persist consistently across various model sizes, architectures, and domain-specific datasets. Our analysis reveals that the benefits of Classical Chinese resources diminish rapidly as local language data increases for Hanja, while showing substantial improvements only in extremely low-resource scenarios for both Korean and Japanese historical documents. These findings emphasize the need for careful empirical validation rather than assuming benefits from indiscriminate cross-lingual transfer.

A Novel Paradigm Boosting Translation Capabilities of Large Language Models

This paper presents a study on strategies to enhance the translation capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in the context of machine translation (MT) tasks. The paper proposes a novel paradigm consisting of three stages: Secondary Pre-training using Extensive Monolingual Data, Continual Pre-training with Interlinear Text Format Documents, and Leveraging Source-Language Consistent Instruction for Supervised Fine-Tuning. Previous research on LLMs focused on various strategies for supervised fine-tuning (SFT), but their effectiveness has been limited. While traditional machine translation approaches rely on vast amounts of parallel bilingual data, our paradigm highlights the importance of using smaller sets of high-quality bilingual data. We argue that the focus should be on augmenting LLMs' cross-lingual alignment abilities during pre-training rather than solely relying on extensive bilingual data during SFT. Experimental results conducted using the Llama2 model, particularly on Chinese-Llama2 after monolingual augmentation, demonstrate the improved translation capabilities of LLMs. A significant contribution of our approach lies in Stage2: Continual Pre-training with Interlinear Text Format Documents, which requires less than 1B training data, making our method highly efficient. Additionally, in Stage3, we observed that setting instructions consistent with the source language benefits the supervised fine-tuning process. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach surpasses previous work and achieves superior performance compared to models such as NLLB-54B and GPT3.5-text-davinci-003, despite having a significantly smaller parameter count of only 7B or 13B. This achievement establishes our method as a pioneering strategy in the field of machine translation.
